Indian Industry News: Micromax becomes India’s third-largest mobile phone vendor

Micromax- this name reminds me of IPL (the Dhoni ad). That was probably the first time I saw the company marketing really hard. Was thinking of checking out that phone one of these days, but to my surprise I read that micromax has become the 3rd largest mobile phone vendor in India. It kept me wondering how and when did this happen, as not many of us have even used it??

On getting into details I learnt that Micromax entered into the mobile handset business through the rural markets. Launched just two years ago, the company garners a market share of 6% (according to research firm IDC). The largest two players undoubtedly being Nokia and Samsung.

The story of the company is quite interesting. It portrays, one- the potential of our rural markets and two- the always encouraging entrepreneurial skill sets of the Indians.

So, although the telecom companies are striving for customer pie, here is a company busy selling handsets to the increasing subscriber base.
