Auto sales: Good start to FY ’11

During April 2010, the Indian auto industry clocked healthy growth in volumes compared to April 2009. This growth came on the back of a low base in April 2009. Compared to the previous month (March 2010), sales growth remained muted. However, this is a common phenomenon as companies push sales at the year-end. What is surprising is that the month-on-month fall in sales is lower than the trend in earlier years. Supply in some cases was not able to meet the demand due to capacity constraints & lower components supply. Thus, demand in April may have been a rollover effect of March.

Bajaj Auto was the only company — as shown in the table below— to have recorded a month-on-month rise in sales.

Passenger car sales by Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors surged 24% and 59.3% re-spectively on a YoY basis.

Sales of commercial vehicles by Tata Motors increased 30%. Compared to previous month, sales by Tata Motors declined sharply, indicating stabilisation post the year-end buying in March.

In the two-wheeler segment, Bajaj Auto outperformed Hero Honda and TVS Motors with a YoY growth of 85.4%.

We continue to believe that increase in personal income tax slabs, higher farm incomes and the revised pay commission norms will push growth in sales of vehicles in India. This is in spite of rise in standard excise duty, upgrade to a more fuel-efficient engine and higher input costs, which led to a rise in prices.
