Railways Revenues up 9.7% in April ’10

The revenue earnings of Indian Railways in April 2010 surged by 9.7% to Rs 7,292.25 crore over the same month last year. Both segments — goods as well as passenger — segments bolstered the growth in revenue earnings. Earnings from passengers soared by a robust 11.5%.

The break-up of revenue earning freight traffic for the financial year 2009-10 indicates that transportation of coal, accounting for nearly 40% of total goods traffic by railways, increased by 7.2% over the previous year. While coal for thermal power and steel plants rose by 3.8% and 2.1%, respectively, a chunk of the growth came from coal for public use. This includes coal used for manufacture of bricks, which has been growing at a rapid pace due to ro-bust construction activity.

Pig iron and finished steel traffic on railways surged 14.1% YoY. Cement traffic increased by 8.4% in April 2010. Robust growth in goods traffic is an indication of a healthy level of economic activity and high industrial production, as a major share of domestically produced goods is transported through railways.

The number of passengers booked on railways during April 2010 rose to 624.63 million compared to 589.96 million during the same period last year — up by 5.9%. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked stood at 319.68 million and 304.95 million, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 6.1% and 5.6%, respectively.
