Automobile sales zoom in June 2010 quarter

Sales of Passenger Vehicles in India rose by 32.7% during April-June 2010 over the year-ago level, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

While Passenger Car sales grew by 33.4%, Utility Vehicles grew by 25.4% and Multi Purpose Vehicles grew by 39.2% during the quarter.

Three Wheelers sales increased by 15.2%. While Passenger Carriers sales grew by 16.5%, Goods Carriers sales grew by 10% in the same period.

Sales have been rising in spite of higher prices. Auto companies have raised prices three times already in calendar year 2010 — in January 2010 due to an increase in input prices (like steel and rubber), then due to the hiked excise duty (2%) announced in the budget, followed by introduction of new emission norms. Continuously rising input costs will push up costs and carmakers may have to increase prices again in future. While car makers including Hero Honda and General Motors (from July 2010) have already raised prices, others such as Maruti Suzuki, Fiat India, Toyota Kirloskar and Ford India also plan to follow suit.

A surge in sales of Nano and Indigo resulted in Tata Motors taking the second spot in domestic monthly car sales in June. The company replaced Hyundai Motors from the second spot.
