Tata Motors joins others; hikes prices

Tata Motors announced a hike in both passenger car and CV prices, effective from October 01, 2010. The company said in a press statement that the Indica and the Indigo would see a price increase in the range of Rs 4,500-Rs 14,000, while its commercial vehicle models would become costlier by Rs 5,000 to Rs 40,000. It cited rising raw material costs and the implementation of the Bharat Stage III norms as reasons for the hike.

Other auto companies that announced price hikes recently include Mahindra & Mahindra and Toyota. Hyundai Motor India too had hiked product prices in September 2010, while Maruti Suzuki had done it August 2010. It is believed that a marginal increase in prices is unlikely to affect car sales in any significant manner, given the positive consumer sentiment in the festival season.
