Coal demand estimates for 2011-12

The demand for coal during the year 2011-12 as assessed during the Mid-Term Appraisal carried out by the Planning Commission in September, 2009 is 713.24 MT against which the estimated domestic coal production during 2011-12 would be 591.78 MT.

In my earlier post  I had mentioned that nearly 84 million tonnes need to be imported to fulfil the domestic coal demand during 2010-11. For meeting partly the shortfall in the requirement of power utilities, CIL has initiated action (as on November 2010) for importing 6 MT of coal for the current year (2010-11). This is way short of requirement and the impact of this can be seen currently on the thermal power generation status.
