Freight Rate Hike By Railways

A circular issued by Indian Railways last week shows that the season levy is increased to 10% from 7% announced in March 2011. This levy is in addition to normal tariff and is applicable to most goods transported during October-March that is considered busy season for railways. In March 2011, railways had levied a busy season charge of 5% on coke and coke group and 7% on all other commodities. Containerised cargo and certain automobile traffic continue to be exempt from this levy.  Read more…

Private Freight Terminal Policy of Indian Railways Finalised

The Union railway ministry has finalised policies for implementation of the private freight terminal and special freight train operator schemes on a public-private partnership model.

While the intention of the policy may be clear, implementation of projects under the PPP route are yet to take off in the desired manner.

Economic Growth boosts Indian Railways’ Revenues

Riding high on the rebound in economic activity, Indian Railways recorded a healthy growth in earnings during the first two months of the current fiscal. Revenue earnings from passengers rose at a faster 7.5% compared to the 7.2% figure in goods earnings. However, goods account for over 65% of the railways’ total earnings.

Coal accounts for the largest chunk of the total goods earnings of the railways. While transport of coal rose 7.2% in FY10, this growth decelerated to 3.1% in April 2010. The reason for this lower growth has always been a topic of debate. Read more…

Railways Revenues up 9.7% in April ’10

The revenue earnings of Indian Railways in April 2010 surged by 9.7% to Rs 7,292.25 crore over the same month last year. Both segments — goods as well as passenger — segments bolstered the growth in revenue earnings. Earnings from passengers soared by a robust 11.5%. Read more…
